Car Rentals

Kristi visits with Janey Cline, Hart County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Science to talk about renting a car.

Before leaving the parking lot you need to be familiar with the car you will be driving. Ask for a walk around to learn about: where to turn on lights, wipers, back wiper (if you have one), cruise control, and radio controls; locate spare tire and jack. Ask about placement of jack; if the type car you are renting doesn’t have a spare tire locate the inflatable tire or the can to seal the leak; ask about emergency policies: Will they pick you up on the side of the road if you have an emergency?, what numbers should you call if your emergency is after hours?, If the contracted road side service is unable to locate a service to pick you up will you be charged for finding your own?, and does the disabled vehicle have to be at the pickup location to be able to get another rental car? Other considerations: traveling on weekends will limit you to only airport locations that will be open to exchange if you were to have trouble and the area in which you are traveling (rural or urban) will also limit your ability to get help. We often take provisions in the winter but we also need to think about packing water and food in the summer as well.
